THE SEPARATION PROCESS: 6 THINGS YOU SHOULD DO SOON AFTER SEPARATION
Where to start after separation? This is a question a lot of our clients ask us after their separation. It is very normal to feel overwhelmed and anxious after separation, especially straight after separation. That is why we created a list with some tips of what to do next.
1. RECORD YOUR SEPARATION DATEMake sure you record the date of separation, so that you can refer back to it later. You also need to notify Centrelink of your change of circumstances within 14 days of the date of separation if you are receiving a benefit or payment from Centrelink.
2. RECORD YOUR FINANCES AND GET YOUR DOCUMENTS SORTEDIf you are planning to leave the family home, make sure that you have copies of documents that prove what you brought financially into the relationship. This is particularly important with original documents, that might get lost and can not be replaced.Check your bank accounts so that you know what savings and liabilities you and your ex-partner have at the time of separation.
3. DO YOUR BUDGETYou will need to understand what your income and expenses are and whether you will be able to afford to move out or keep the family home. You will need to work out whether you will have enough money to financially support yourself or whether you need to discuss financial support with your ex.You might also be eligible for a Centrelink payment or benefit, maybe at least while you are going through the separation process. You could also be entitled to child support payments.Talk to Centrelink or even a financial adviser about your financial situation.
4. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDSChange your passwords for your accounts and devices, email accounts, social media and internet banking, so that your ex-partner can no longer access these.
5. PLAN FOR YOUR CHILDRENWork out all the expenses and costs for your children, such as school fees, uniforms, activities, clothing, health care and other living expenses. Make a roster of your children's activities. Have a conversation with your ex-partner, who is looking after the children and who is paying for the costs and expenses or what part of it.
6. GET LEGAL ADVICEGet legal advice so that you understand the process of separation and divorce and what is involved. It is important to understand your next steps and get answers to your concerns as soon as possible after separation. This does not mean that you are going straight to court into a legal battle. A good family lawyer helps you understand the process and come to a resolution as quickly as possible, without having to go to court.
